When you attempt to play any stream on Twitch, an error 4000 may occur. It is usually displayed alongside the message“Media resource format not supported.”.
This error is frustrating as it can recur several times per stream. We will give you a list of possible solutions in this guide.
Twitch may display an error 4000 because of a variety of issues, including “a struggle” when you try to share your computer’s resources with another stream.
Twitch will eventually stop working and indicate that the resource format is invalid.
Here are some solutions to help you troubleshoot the problem and fix it.
How to fix error 4000 in Twitch
- Close other media players or streams
- Refresh the stream
- Unplug any audio hardware then plug it back
- Change your audio card input to the primary audio driver
- Use the twitch popout player
- Change autoplay settings on Chrome
Method 1: Connect other media players/streams
Before you reload Twitch, close any streaming media player that is currently open in another browser. Twitch will not load if another stream takes over a resource it requires to stream.
If the problem persists after you have closed all media players and streams, open Task Manager and close all other open applications. Open your browser once more and then try playing a stream on Twitch.
Method 2: Refresh the stream
This error can be fixed by simply restarting your playback. This error could be caused by your computer disconnecting from the internet while streaming.
Restarting playback does not solve the problem. You can refresh your browser.
Open twitch in another tab or browser and try streaming. It may not work on another browser if it does. This could indicate compatibility issues with plugins from your older browsers.
Method 3: Unplug any audio equipment and then plug it back
Unplug any audio hardware that you own, such as headphones or external speakers, to prevent your twitch stream’s operation.
After you have removed the audio hardware, restart your stream. Once the error occurs, you can plug your speakers or headphones in.
If you connect your computer to a Bluetooth device, this error may occur. You should also ensure that they are disconnected.
Method 4: Switch your audio card input to the primary driver
You might have problems streaming on Twitch TV if your Windows PC has an audio device that switches to the primary driver.
These steps will allow you to change the audio input back to the primary audio device on your Windows computer.

This is not a permanent solution, but it can be a great way to stream instantly if your twitch player doesn’t load.
Click on the to open the popout player for Twitch. Gear icon clicks on the Popout Player button at the bottom of the player.
Method 6: Modify autoplay settings in Chrome
To fix the video not supported error, you can change the autoplay settings in Chrome to stop audio and video playing in the background.
These steps will allow you to modify autoplay settings in Google Chrome.

This setting will prevent audio and videos from playing automatically on websites that you visit. To play a video, you will need to click on the play button.
This should be enough. If Twitch shows an error message indicating that “media not supported”, get in touch with their support team.
