As part of our continuous series to educate users about some of the stupid phishing scams, we bring a new one which states that Excel is blocked if you do not login and verify your data.
While people learn more about phishing scams and how to spot them, scammers continue to create odd strategies to lure people to enter their login credentials.
Such is the case with this recent phishing email, which claims that, unless you login first, you can not use Excel because of a “device lag.”
The full text of this email is below.
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN EXCEL OR ANY DOCUMENT FILE DUE TO SYSTEM DELAY. KINDLY CLICK BELOW AND COMPLETE THE DETAIL TO VERIFY YOUR ACCOUNT. CONFIGURE EXCEL AND PDF SETTINGS
When you click on the “Configure Excel and PDF settings” button, they will be put in a SharePoint-hosted login form pretending to be an Excel shared file.
If a user enters his credentials, the information is saved so that attackers can access, use and take over other accounts owned by the victim for BEC scams.
As normal, if you encounter a suspicious email about your email accounts or login credentials, please contact your system administrator before you click on any links or enter your credentials.
