Sometimes, all you need to do is show someone else the item on your display. This is when a screenshot is best. There are several ways to take screenshots on a Chromebook. Let’s go through them all!
How to take a picture with buttons
The easiest way to take a screenshot on your Chromebook is to use switch combinations. This could be done on the Chromebook’s keyboard, or by using the volume and power keys.
You will start with keyboard shortcuts. Next, there are two that you’ll want to remember:
- To see the entire screen, press Ctrl + ]]
- To take a screenshot of a specific part of your display, use Ctrl + Shift + ]]
You will use your mouse/cursor for the following control. It’s great for those occasions when you only have a small area of your display to use.
It is worth noting that the controls may be slightly different if your Chromebook has an external keyboard. You’ll need to use Ctrl+ F5 or Ctrl+ Shift+ F5, respectively.
Let’s suppose you use your Chromebook tablet style. You would like to take a screenshot. While in tablet mode, the computer keyboard is still dormant. However, it is easy to take a screenshot. To take a screenshot in this situation, you will only need to hold the power button volume down.
This combo will take a picture of your entire screen in tablet style. This is your only option. You will need to crop the image after you have removed the whole display.
How to take a picture with a stylus
If you have a Samsung Chromebook Plus or Pixelbook with all the Pixelbook Pen features, or any other Chromebook that has an included stylus, you have an additional option.
The menu of resources will appear in the lower right corner if you are using the pencil. You can either capture a specific area of the screen (and use your pencil to draw it) or the entire screen.

Although the built-in methods for taking a screenshot on a Chromebook are great, you can always add Chrome extensions to give you more options.
