Step 1. Determining the light metering modes

The D3300 has three light-metering modes, which you can control by pressing the I button from the settings menu. The default mode is normally Matrix mode, where the camera measures the light in many sections of the image and selects the settings for even exposure. Step 2. Optimum white balance

To choose from, there are distinct white balance modes. When you are filming under mixed lighting, use preset manual white balance. The white balance will be set to Auto by default. Step 3. Aperture setting

To monitor the depth-of-field in your portrait, you can adjust the value of aperture priority. For portraits, an aperture value of f5.6 or lower is optimal. It creates a shallow depth of field that blurs out the background perfectly, keeping the emphasis on your subject. You can do so by turning the rear control dial if you want to alter the aperture. A deeper depth-of-field can be achieved using a higher Aperture Priority setting of f9 or above. By using the command dial to adjust the aperture, the camera sets the shutter speed automatically.

Step 4. Accurate Shutter Priority

You may use the Command dial on the back of the camera to adjust the shutter speed, and select the mode marked S. In order to ensure that the photo is correctly exposed, the camera can change the lens aperture. Using Shutter Priority to set the shutter speed to 1/30, 1/60 of a second, or faster while shooting while holding the unit in your hands. The Vibration Reduction system won’t be able to compensate for even lower values and your portraits will look hazy.

Step 5. Controlling in Manual Mode

The Manual mode is especially useful as not only the shutter speed but also the aperture can be controlled. If the exposure is switched off, the camera will warn you, but it will not deter you from shooting. You will find it difficult to take a perfect portrait as a beginner, changing both aperture and shutter velocity at the same time. You’ll improve with time, though, and Manual mode will help you quickly get complex shots.
